WIMWA event sponsorship 2011

It is that time of year again when we need to start planning for WIMWA events for 2011.

Please see below proposed dates for events.

Day Proposed Dates Time Sponsor Theme Location
Monday 8 March 0730-0900 Chamber of Minerals and EnergyWA Women in Resources Awards and International Women’s Day Convention Centre
Friday 15 April
Friday 20 May
Friday 24 June
Friday 29 July
Friday 2 September
Friday 7 October
Friday 11 November
Friday 16 December

I am assuming that you have been to one or some of the events so that you have some understanding of the usual setup. Most events in 2010 had up to 200 people attend (we had to limit RSVPs due to a huge response); we try to stick to venues in the CBD/West Perth/East Perth. Most events are either a Thursday or Friday 5.30-7.30pm Sundowner style with 20 minute talk, or a longer talk at a breakfast function. Open to different ideas and concepts…

Cost will depend on how you do it, if you self cater at your own venue it will be cheaper, alternatively you can put a fixed amount on the bar and people can buy their own drinks. In summary a function can cost between $1000 and $15000. The minimum would be provision of a venue and some food. I hope this is enough information; most of you will have someone in your organisation that can work out what you might spend on a function based on numbers.

We can help you find someone to co-sponsor an event if this suits you better.

Following on from the success of the the second one day seminar in September we will be running something similar again in 2011 and we will looking for sponsors for this too.

Please submit expressions of interest asap to get the date that you would prefer. Also for the September seminar to get in on the ground floor!

Cheers

Sabina

Wanted: vacation work opportunities for engineering students

Have you considered offering vacation work within your organisation for engineering students this summer? Engineering students have to complete 12 weeks of vacation work in their field of engineering in order to graduate, and it seems to be getting more difficult for many students to find opportunities.

Our industry is faced with (another) looming skills shortage and if we want well-qualified engineers we need to support them with vacation work opportunities. Vac work is also an ideal way of showcasing your company to prospective employees, and building a relationship with people in our future recruitment pool.

If you are able to offer a vacation work role to an engineering student (any discipline), even if it is for 6 weeks rather than 12, please contact me at stanborough@internode.on.net. I am currently mentoring a student looking for chemical engineering vacation work, but in the event that I receive interest from more than one company or for a variety of engineering disciplines, Sabina and I will use our connections within university careers centres to match you with suitable candidates still looking for vac work.

Regards,

Miriam Stanborough
