Wanted: vacation work opportunities for engineering students

Have you considered offering vacation work within your organisation for engineering students this summer? Engineering students have to complete 12 weeks of vacation work in their field of engineering in order to graduate, and it seems to be getting more difficult for many students to find opportunities.

Our industry is faced with (another) looming skills shortage and if we want well-qualified engineers we need to support them with vacation work opportunities. Vac work is also an ideal way of showcasing your company to prospective employees, and building a relationship with people in our future recruitment pool.

If you are able to offer a vacation work role to an engineering student (any discipline), even if it is for 6 weeks rather than 12, please contact me at stanborough@internode.on.net. I am currently mentoring a student looking for chemical engineering vacation work, but in the event that I receive interest from more than one company or for a variety of engineering disciplines, Sabina and I will use our connections within university careers centres to match you with suitable candidates still looking for vac work.

Regards,

Miriam Stanborough

Effective Flexible Work Arrangements – The AusIMM Bulletin

Many employees, at one time or another, will opt for a flexible work arrangement during part of their career. This can be for a number of reasons, which include caring for children or family members, fulfilling sporting or community commitments, attending to health matters or a desire for greater work/life balance.

In the February Edition of the The AusIMM Bulletin, an article will be included on ‘Effective Flexible Work Arrangements’ in which three or four examples of an effective flexible work arrangement will be profiled. If you are, or have utilised such an arrangement, and are happy to be interviewed for this series please email Monika Sarder, Manager of Policy and Professional Standards, at msarder@ausimm.com.au before COB 1st of October.

Note that this is an initiative of the Women in Mining Networking Committee of The AusIMM, however we are looking for examples from both males and females in the industry.

Intrepid Pathways – Women in the Resources Sector

Intrepid Pathways – Women in the Resources Sector

As one of its key goals, WIMWA has sought to bring women together to network, encourage, and learn from each other. Events facilitate links to mentors, provide access to inspiring speakers, and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

To add to this networking resource we have put together a series of profiles with the goal of providing access to a wealth of career experiences. Taken together, these provide a virtual mentoring function to both men and women in mining.

Thanks very much to Monika Sarder for co-ordinating this project and thanks to the individuals who provided profiles. For more information go to:
